Car of the Future unveiled in Sydney
A prototype Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon, built to the V8 Supercar Championship's new Car of the Future specification due to be introduced in 2013, have been unveiled ahead of this weekend's 2011 season finale in Sydney.
The new control chassis, aimed at reducing costs in Australia's premier racing series, has been in development for two years and won't be used in the series until the 2013 season, when all teams will move to the new design.
Though the cars remain faithful externally to the appearance of the current model Holden Commodore VE II and Ford Falcon FG race cars, the majority of the changes are inside the car, focusing on safety and cost effectiveness.
The fuel tank has been repositioned from the rear to the inside of the chassis, with new safety measures including a collapsible steering column, additional side protection and polycarbonate windscreens.
The cars will also run on 18" wheels as opposed to 17", with Dunlop already committed to being the series tyre supplier through to 2017.
"We already have an outstanding product so this is a case of evolution, not revolution," said Mark Skaife, Chairman of the V8 Supercars Commission.
"The major changes are under the skin or in the design architecture primarily to make the cars cheaper to build and to repair. We also want to ensure the market relevance by keeping the car as close as it can possibly be to the car on the show room floor."
"We want for the whole of the industry to be able to run the cars more cost-effectively. So for everybody - the team owners, the fans and supporters of our sport -it will keep our teams more viable and provide better racing."
