VOOR NEDERLANDS GELIEVE OMHOOG TE SCROLLEN
We are delighted to update you about the making of GRAND PRIX ZANDVOORT, the book and film that together cover the complete history of the Dutch Formula 1 Grand Prix.
Since our last update, much has happened and the project now nears completion. From Friday November 1 onwards GRAND PRIX ZANDVOORT will be available exclusively via our website
www.zandvoortgrandprix.com, which by then will be linked to a bespoke webshop in which you can order the copy that you have reserved. Naturally, we will send you a reminder when this release date approaches.
GRAND PRIX ZANDVOORT costs €89,- euro (or the equivalent in Pounds or US dollar). The remarkable book comprises 400 pages and some 720 photographs and includes the documentary film, which is enclosed on DVD. This film is 77 minutes long excluding bonus materials.
The cover of GRAND PRIX ZANDVOORT features the striking 1966 Ferrari 312 of Lorenzo Bandini. The letters of the title are made of photographs of famous drivers that starred in the Dutch Grand Prix, such as Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark, Niki Lauda and Ayrton Senna.
From this Thursday on you can flip through some 100 pages of the book at
www.zandvoortgrandprix.com, see two random samples below.
A wonderful reason to move the release to November 1, was the enthusiasm of the former F1 drivers involved to be part of this project, which is why we, in the end, did not only film in Holland, but also elsewhere in Europe to interview Sir Stirling Moss, Jacky Ickx, Gijs van Lennep and René Arnoux. The Frenchman welcomed us at his watch making company in Switzerland last summer (left) to passionately recall Zandvoort and the extraordinary turbo years, while Martijn Lindenberg (right) shares his memories of the tragic race of 1973 and how the live TV broadcast he directed would change the sport forever.
Presenting and narrating the documentary film that comes with the book, is Jan Lammers. Born and raised in Zandvoort, he raced in the Dutch Grand Prix from 1979 to 1982. Not only does he host the film from the circuit (left), he also tells its story (right).
Both the book and the film are in English and Dutch.
The film features much ‘never seen before’ footage, for example colour films of 1953 (left) and 1964 (centre) and behind the scenes images of the making of the Hollywood film “Grand Prix” that was partly shot at Zandvoort in 1966 (right). These are just a few examples of the many fragments that we found and restored for the documentary. Also, we unearthed footage of the first and only street race held in Zandvoort in 1939 and even the test race that was organised on this street circuit (below left). Apart from fantasticracing footage of the Fifties into the Eighties, we have also included wonderfully obscure footage such as these onboard shots made after practice in 1961 (below centre) and a film of prerace testing in 1977 featuring the likes of Michael Bleekemolen (below right).
The bonus material is precisely that; a proper bonus. This includes for example Jacky Ickx commentating on the film of his 1971 win with great flair and pleasure (left), while Stirling Moss gets out his scrapbooks to explain the original circuit (right).
In the DVD’s menu (below) you can opt for English or Dutch subtitles and of course start the film or the bonus clips. Also, we will produce a film poster of which you can see a few concept designs below. The actual poster will be released soon.
In addition to countless anecdotes, stories and facts, and the more than 700 photographs, the book includes many rare documentations, for example from the archives of Ferrari (left) and mayor Van Alphen, the spiritual founder of the circuit in who’s files we found the letter British racing legend Sammy Davis sent shortly after the war to share his recommendations for the track (centre). The statistics chapter features a collage of posters, tickets, stickers and other memorabilia.
In these extensive statistics, unravelled by Erik Verkaaik (see two sample pages below) you will find every car that was ever entered for every Dutch Grand Prix, including the chassis numbers of even the spare cars.
In short, GRAND PRIX ZANDVOORT has become a rather big project, a mix of stories, photographs, film footage, interviews, facts, documentations and figures that jointly form the definitive document about a legendary Grand Prix classic.
We hope you will enjoy it as much as we did making it!
